ekahau HeatMapper – Wi-Fi Mapping Tool

I recently found myself needing a solid tool to audit an environment with on-going wireless troubles.  Moving the access points around and changing the broadcast channel to something “else” is not the best method to providing a reliable result to any client.

From a little research, I found a free tool by ehahau, which they provide for free!  Of course my cynicism kicked right in, but what’s the harm in trying?  I have used this in several environments and it is incredible.  The cost-benefit is stellar, of course, and it provides plenty of information on what is going on with wireless signals.  It is wonderful to finally take much of the guessing out of what interferences are invading the client environment, what channels the neighboring wireless networks are broadcasting on, and if the placement of the access points are optimal–or not.

After running through the audit using the software, it paints a nice picture with colors to designate signal strength.  I found this to be very helpful when presenting the findings back to the client in order to sell a true solution.

Have a look for yourself at their website (http://www.ekahau.com/wifidesign/ekahau-heatmapper).
